Jon Baker from "CHiPs"

Jon Baker from “CHiPs”

Here is a list of the most frequently asked questions about Larry and CHiPs. If you have some to add, please let us know!

1. How old is Larry?

Larry is 69 years old. He was born on August 8th, 1947.

2. How can I write to him?

To request an autograph, click here. To send Larry a letter or card, address it to him at Box 185, Staten Island NY 10314.

3. Why did Jon wear a baton and tan gloves?

The character of Jon Baker was based on a real CHP officer named Robert Hayden. Robert bears an amazing resemblance to Larry and when on duty he always wore his baton and tan gloves, so Jon did the same. Officer Hayden served as a consultant on CHiPs during the first season.  Larry still has the gloves and baton although he was not a big fan of the baton. It tended to get in the way and be hard to handle sometimes!  Also the producers needed to differentiate one character from the other visually so this served that need.

4. Is Larry a veteran like Jon was?

Yes. Larry served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 t0 1973 and spent 13 months in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

5. Did Larry do his own stunts?

Larry did many of his own stunts, (riding horses, JetSkis, and the motorcycle among others) but for high speed pursuits and other dangerous things, he had a stunt double.  He used Gary Davis in the beginning and later Scott Dockstetter.

6. Are Larry and Erik best friends like Jon and Ponch were?

According to Larry, they are really enjoying seeing each other at the various personal appearances they do together,. They often go out to eat together and reminisce about the good old days.  Larry says that the tabloids and a few extras made their differences bigger than they really were in his opinion and yet they are definitely different people. The difference of the young Latin man from Harlem and the young man from Wyoming is what made the show so entertaining.  Seeing them laugh and joke together is like old times.

7.  Why did Larry leave CHiPs?

Larry decided to leave CHiPs because he wanted to pursue other creative projects. He didn’t feel challenged on the show anymore and found the studio politics draining.

8. Will there ever be another CHiPs reunion movie?

It doesn’t seem likely. For some reason, Warner Brothers is holding on to CHiPs with an iron fist but not doing anything with it. The planned movie never happened, and with the cast getting older and having moved on in their lives, a second reunion movie probably won’t happen, and if it does, the chances of Erik appearing in it are slim.

9. When will Seasons 3-6 be released? Can’t Larry pull some strings?

Warner Brothers has no plans to release the rest of series at this time. Larry has absolutely no pull with the studio. Whether they ever release the rest of the series is completely up to them. We suggest writing to them to let them know how much you’d like to see the rest of the series on DVD!

10.  Can I have Larry’s phone number/email address?

Larry prefers to keep his personal info private. You can order an autograph via the fan store,  send him cards and letters via the fan mail address, or if you want to book him for a personal appearance, interview, or acting opportunity, send a proposal to sue7m3@larrywilcox.net and it will be forwarded to him.

11. Does Larry keep in touch with any of his CHiPs cast mates?

Larry is friends with Robert Pine, Paul Linke and Lew Saunders (Fritz) but is not in touch with anyone else on a regular basis. He was overjoyed to see them all at the recent CHiPs reunion though and is still quite fond of them all. His fantasy is to create more TV productions and employ them all if they were so inclined.

12. What happened to Jon’s blue truck?

No one seems to know. We hope it found a good home with someone! The Mini Cooper Jon drove in the first season was purchased by Larry when they switched over to the pick up truck and enjoyed as his personal vehicle for many years before it was passed on to his son.

13. Is Larry anything like Jon?

Yes, very much so. Larry says Jon wasn’t much of a challenge because he was essentially playing himself. Both Larry and Jon are Vietnam vets from Wyoming who love horses and are athletic and active. They also have the same kind, warm personality and both tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves!

14. Where can I watch CHiPs online?

CHiPs is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon Video. As of now there are no places online where the series can be streamed for free legally.

 15. Is that Larry posting on Facebook?

While Larry does read and post to the Facebook page when time allows, it is run by his personal assistant and close friend Sue and all the posts made by the page are from her. She signs her name to each post to avoid confusion. Larry enjoys the page but just doesn’t have the time to maintain it so Sue does it for him.

16.  What’s this chat room I keep hearing about? How can I chat with Larry?

We have a chat room that we meet in every Friday and Saturday night. Sometimes we have chats on other days too. This past December we had a lovely holiday party there the Sunday before Christmas. Chats usually start around 9pm Eastern, and Larry does join us to chat whenever he can. Click the Chat link  to join us!

17. Will there ever be another CHiPs series?

Warner Brothers has no plans for one at this time. Write to them and tell them you’d like to see one!

18.  How long does it take to get a response to an autograph request?

The length of time depends largely on Larry’s schedule. He is a very busy man and always has multiple projects and commitments to attend to. However, he does  respond to every request! Your patience will pay off.

19. What can I send him?

Larry welcomes your cards and letters and you’re welcome to send him photos to sign for a small fee. You can even send him photos of yourself, but PLEASE be respectful. Larry has been happily married for nearly 30 years and is not interested in any female attention other than his beautiful wife’s!

20. I’m an autograph dealer, will Larry sign some stuff for me?

Please contact Sue at sue7m3@larrywilcox.net if you are interested in arranging a signing or having bulk items signed. Larry will evaluate such opportunities on a case by case basis.

21. Will Larry ever do more acting?

He would like to and has been looking for opportunities. He knows he is not leading man material anymore but thinks he still has a lot to offer as a character actor.

22. Will there be another cast reunion like the one in 2012?

Yes, one is scheduled for September 2017!

23. Does Larry have his own Facebook account? Can I get on his friends list?

Yes, he does have his own Facebook account but prefers to keep it private. He is careful about what friend requests he accepts due to past problems and tends to restrict his friends list to people he knows. You are welcome to follow him on Twitter though!

24. Where can I buy CHiPs photos to have Larry sign?

You can purchase photos in the 7M3 store.

25. Why didn’t they ever use their guns?

Rick Rosner, the series creator, wanted it that way. CHiPs was meant to be a different type of cop show, one where, to quote the great Paul Linke (Grossman), the officers solved problems with their hearts and heads instead of with guns and violence.”

  7. I loved Chips, the show came from a simpler time(I am but a year younger than Larry is now). Shows from that time were to entertain us and let us use our imaginations! From a time before Hollywood decided to use nudity and special effects blood spatter to wow their audiences. This was a time when the good guys always won and the bad guys lost . Good lessons for young people to see,I think! Chips,The A Team,Emergency,Adam12,Magnum PI. Exciting shows that entertained and brought the family together in front of the tv,without all of the splatter and Gore and nudity and sex we see on television all of the time now. This is why I watch a lot of METV now! Oh yeah! Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

  8. I’ve been recording chips every night for months. And I just realized that Larry Wilcox wasn’t on the show anymore. Three episodes into the new guy I finally realized how bad of an actor Erik Estrada really is. All arrogance no talent Larry Wilcox actually made that show what it was. but I guess I understand him leaving the show if I had to carry a no talent hack like Erik Estrada I’d leave too.

  9. I’m glad Larry is alive & well.
My Mom & I had wondered why Larry had left “CHIP’s”.
I hope Larry & Family are Christians.
    God bless them!!!
    God bless you, too (Sue/Admin.)!!!

  10. That is good he has personal and professional life his character is like me down to tee respects his fans I say thumbs up
Shame on Erik doing to his friend or friendony

  11. Larry I have always enjoyed your demeanor and a act of worship but you seem like an alright guy in my eyes. You are the type of person that I would like to see my children be. Also my grandchildren
    Thank you
    Cliff

  12. I would just like to thank Mr. Wilcox for his work. I have to say, while all my girlfriends were all about “Ponch”, I thought Jon made the show what it was meant to be. Mr. Wilcox truly was a wonderful role model, especially for that time in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He showed our young people that it is possible, no matter the provocation, one can “take care of business” without obscenities, bloodshed or gratuitous violence. Thank you also for your service to our country.

    Sincerely,
    Sharon Caraway

  13. I loved your movies and I enjoyed the chips quizzes

  14. I have been trying to stay on the fan site but you to good looking to look at even now I am 49 born October 8 1966 and you still give me goose bumps your friend linda

  15. In response to #25.
I really like the fact that the officers (charters in Chips) did not use their guns. More officers should try to deescalate situations, instead of escalating them as I had personally witnessed.
I believe that Chips is a great influence on police for it can show them how they have other ways to deal with situations.
Some shows and movies show cops corrupt and unlawful how some take the law in their own hands and wrongfully assault or abuse their authority. I was extremely happy that Chips was not this kind of show and I am sure it had influenced me watching it as a child growing up. Wonder Woman was also a show I watched, which also had influence on me.
Being a ex cop myself I always tried to deescalate situations and I never had problems with people. They always did what I asked of them. I gave people respect as I am not the judge and jury, that is for courts to decide.
I spoke with another ex-cop who retired from San Diego Police Department after 20 years and found she practiced the same kind of policing with the same attitude as I had and she too always had the cooperation of people and the respect.
Chips is on (San Diego. CA) channel called Charge on TV is you would like to post this, so people know they can watch it.
My husband and I enjoy watching Chips together.
Thank you Mr. Larry Wilcox for the wonderful memories! Next time you see any of the rest of the cast let them know I said Thank you for the wonderful memories!
    God Bless You Always!
    Sincerely,
    Debra An
